- What is the profession of a doula?
A doula/labor assistant's profession is to be with parents. A doula is an advocate and support for parents during their prenatal care, to the delivery of their baby, and during the immediate postpartum time. The doula provides physical and emotional support during labor. A doula's only role is to the woman and her family and does not perform any clinical duties.
- Why do I want to be certified as a doula?
To become certified you will gain knowledge, confidence, and spiritual and
psychological awareness of birth. Doctors, midwives, nurses have many duties
and other clients to attend to. The doula's only role is to provide parents with
physical, emotional during the challenging time of pregnancy, labor, delivery and
postpartum.
- Is certification required to be a doula and in certifying what are the advantages?
There are no requirements to become a doula, but being certified allows for
recognition of the profession. Our training will prepare you with the skills to be
a doula for your clients with understanding of all aspects of pregnancy, birth,
postpartum and the needs of the parents.
- What will I be certified for upon completion of training with Intuitive Doula?
With Intuitive Doula you will be certified as an Antepartum, Birth and Postpartum Doula. Many programs separate trainings for Antepartum Doula, Birth Doula and Postpartum Doula. Our program is comprehensive.
- What is included in the course and do students need to purchase other books or materials?
Manual and the two required textbooks are sent via priority mail. There is also a required and recommended reading list. We encourage students to purchase used books or use library loaned books. For most CPR courses there is a fee.
- Do I need to attend a workshop or conference to gain certification?
Not at this time. We plan to offer workshops in the future, but they would not be required of students to gain certification. We intend to stay a distance learning option for certification.
- What is "distance education?"
Distance education delivers education to students who are not "on site".
Rather than attending traditional classes, teachers and students communicate
via the Internet or mail.
- What makes Intuitive Doula training special?
A CNM/FNP and a Doula/Childbirth Educator with many years of experience developed our course. We offer a unique blend of distance education with personal support throughout the training.
- How long does the program take?
This depends on the amount of time the student has to spend on
completing the assignments. We suggest completion in 18 months or less.
- How do I find birth clients?
It is up to each student to find clients in their community that they can
work with during the training. We do offer suggestions and will provide
references if necessary.
- What can I earn as a Doula?
Independent Doulas set their own fees. Consider where you live and the economic climate. Urban doulas may be able to set their fees a bit higher than rural doulas. Consider what you are contracting for: Support during pregnancy? Support only for the birth? Support only as a postpartum doula? Or support during pregnancy, birth and postpartum time. Estimate hours that you will spend and determine an hourly rate that is satisfactory for you and your client. Module V outlines the 'ins and outs" of setting up your doula business.
